SHIPPING MONITOR
The SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE SHIPPING MONITOR contains the following
information:
- INDEX FLEET. Current and probable future Resale Values and Time Charter
Rates of the vessels of the INDEX FLEET. Separate reports for Bulk Carriers and
Tankers. Graphs of the previous year's history. The vessels of the INDEX FLEET
are representative of the world fleet; changes in the values or rates of the world
fleet are mirrored in the INDEX Fleet.

- VALUES/RATES. Current and probable future Resale Values and Time Charter
Rates of representative sizes of Bulk Carriers and Tankers. Values and rates are
calculated for ships 5, 10 and 15 years of age.

- VALUE RATIOS. Two graphs, one for a Panamax Bulk Carrier and one for an
Aframax Tanker, that track a recent value phenomenon. For years, the ratios of
older to newer ship values remained relatively constant. Recently those ratios
increased dramatically, indicating an imbalance across the price/age spectrum.

- TARGET RATES. Ranges of future probable Time Charter Rates for
representative sizes of Bulk Carriers and Tankers, with their probabilities. This
report is designed to answer the question, "what is the probability next year of
achieving a 'target' freight rate (or better), or, conversely, what is the
probability of doing worse than the 'target'?"

- APPENDIX: SIMULATION RESULTS. The actual results of the Monte-Carlo
Simulations that produce some of the values and rates of the reports mentioned
above are available as a separately printed report.

- NOTE ON METHOD. The values and rates printed in these reports are
calculated as follows:-
- ACTUAL VALUES, current or past, are derived from statistical models that
are based on extensive databases of actual sales and chartering data.
- FUTURE VALUES are derived from a Monte-Carlo simulation of the shipping
markets. This technique projects the strongly cyclical nature of those markets
onto the near term future.

GUIDE TO RESALE/RESIDUAL VALUES AND 6 TO 12 MONTH TIME CHARTER
RATES
Inflation Adjusted Historic Averages (In Current Dollars). This
compilation is primarily intended for those calculating rates of return on
ship investment proposals or similar financial situations, where unbiased
estimates of future ship values and charter rates are needed. It may also be
used in judging the relationship of present market levels to their historic
averages.
The Guide covers Bulk Carriers from 20,000 to 160,000 deadweight tons and
Tankers from 20,000 to 260,000 deadweight tons. For Ship Resale/Residual
Values, averages are calculated from 5 to 25 years of age.
The compiled averages are based upon the data contained in the Shipping
Intelligence databases of thousands of actual ship sales and time charters.
